The fire that broke out in Khayelitsha settlement left four people dead on Tuesday morning, CT authorities said. The tragic incident led to the deaths of a young woman and her three children.
The City’s Fire & Rescue Service received a call of a formal dwelling alight, in Hlomela Street, Town 2, Khayelitsha at around 4:50am, according to Cape Town fire and rescue services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse.
“Three fire fighting appliances, a rescue vehicle and 14 staff members were dispatched to the incident,” Carelse stated.
The firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze at 5:20am. The woman, two girls and one boy passed away as a result of smoke inhalation.
Another settlement resident barely escaped death having sustained moderate injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital.
The authorities are on the scene investigating the causes of the fire.
