The Shanghai government has confirmed that five people died following the building collapse on Thursday morning.
According to the reports, the incident took place at the construction site in the city’s centre. The structure, which was previously used as a dealership for Mercedes-Benz cars, collapsed during a renovation process entrapping 20 people beneath tons of bricks and steel bars.
The size of the building is indicated to be 3,000 square metres.
The local emergency and police services are investigating what exactly caused the collapse, no versions have been presented to the public yet. Chinese and international mass media have been prohibited to enter the area, which had been fully locked up by the law-enforcement units.
