Gauteng police department opened a manhunt for alleged suspects in an arson case after the petrol bombing of a 58-year-old town councillor’s house had been committed in Mohlakeng in Randfontein on the West Rand. The councillor identified as Festus “Mchini” Matshogo is fighting for his life in a local hospital after sustaining extensive burns to his upper body.
The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) explosives unit was dispatched to the alleged arson scene in the early hours of Sunday morning. SAPS spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubele, says the incident happened at about 4am.
“While the circumstances surrounding this incident as well as a motive are yet to be determined, police can confirm that at least three unused petrol bombs were found at the scene. Preliminary investigation on the extent of the damage to the house also confirms the possibility that other explosives, other than petrol bombs, could have been used by the suspects,” Makhubele stated.
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Gauteng police investigators.
