IEC in Giyani commented on damaging ballot papers strongly condemning unlawful acts of offenders

Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) official, chief electoral officer, Sy Mamabolo, commented on the arrest of two men for allegedly destroying ballots on Monday night. Two knife-wielding men threatened a group of (IEC) officials in Giyani, in the Limpopo province, damaging 93 ballot papers.

Limpopo police said that the duo, aged 30 and 35, was accused of malicious damage to property and contravention of the electoral act.

“The IEC officials were about to enter one homestead at around 11am in Guwela village where they were going to assist one citizen to cast a special vote when a group of men approached them, prevented them from executing their duties and damaged the ballot papers,” Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said.

The IEC officials were on an assignment to help a resident cast a special vote, ahead of the elections on Wednesday.
