940kg of garbage removed from Amanzimtoti coastline

The heavy rains have left the Amanzimtoti coastline covered with washed up garbage. Yesterday, the Clean Surf Project team started cleaning the Winklespruit stretch of beach soon after the downpour had stopped.

“The whole coastline is extremely affected by pollution after these rains,” CSP founder, Denzil van der Westhuizen, stated.

He confirmed that they managed to get rid of as much as 940kg of litter from only 500m beach stretch.

“We urged the community to go down whenever they can, to whatever stretch of beach they can and try pick up some rubbish. Filled rubbish bags can be left quite a distance up from the high water mark, as the tide is still very high after the rains,” he added.

Organised beach clean-ups are also scheduled. Amanzimtoti Main Beach is set to be tackled on Thursday morning from 8:30am, Pipeline Beach – on Saturday from 9am. Bags will be supplied.
