On Monday morning, the police squads in Western Cape successfully completed a joint operation and arrested a bakkie driver with the vehicle full of abalone. Reports indicate that the discovery’s selling price on the markets is over R3.8million.
4,407 pieces of the sea snails were carefully packed in 44 bags, which the alleged smuggler was transporting through the streets in Swellendam. Even thought the man’s identity has not been revealed yet, the police stated that his car also proved to be stolen.
“The driver was arrested for being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle, false number plates, as well as the fact that he was in possession of 4,407 pieces of abalone,” provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said.
The perpetrator will make his first appearance in court soon.
