On Monday morning, a patient transport bus rolled down an embankment off the R600 between Ladysmith and Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal, leaving one woman dead and 26 other people injured.
“It is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll down the embankment,” ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring advised.
The paramedics who arrived on the scene at around 8am found the large transporter at the bottom of the embankment with several people still sitting inside. Others were walking around the scene. A dead body of a woman in her thirties was discovered at a distance from the vehicle.
According to Meiring, twenty-six patients were treated on the scene for injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Some were taken to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital for further care.
The traffic flow in the area was delayed until the scene was cleared. The bus had to be towed away.
The police are investigating the accident.
