Kroonstad residents set on fire three heavy trucks during a protest on the R76 between Steynsburg and Kroonstad on Thursday night.
According to Captain Stephen Thakeng’s statement, a case of malicious damage to property and public violence is under police investigation.
“We suspect the violent protests in Kroonstad [on Thursday] spilled over to Steynsrus at about 21:00 on Thursday night. That’s when three trucks were burnt. We are monitoring the situation,” the police spokesperson said.
Stephen Thakeng announced that there were no injuries or residents’ casualties reported by the authorities as well as no arrests.
It is reported that more than 60 people were apprehended after Post Office and municipal vehicles were set alight by protesters on Thursday, in Maokeng and Phomolong in Kroonstad, Free State.
Thakeng said that a concerned group in Maokeng, Kroonstad, who were unsatisfied about service delivery and high unemployment rates, had started blocking streets with burning tyres at around 6:00 a.m.
