Soweto police officers have been attacked by a group of Freedom Park Secondary School pupils who were outraged by another scheduled ‘school safety search’.
So-called ‘school safety search’ regularly conducted by the Johannesburg police department in a number of schools. This programme was designed by the Johannesburg education department along with the police department to keep learners safe while attending schools and reduce the number of illicit firearms in possession of pupils.
“Police were attacked with rocks by the students. They were with members of the Youth League,” the National police spokesperson Lt-Col Brenda Muridili said.
Also, pupils allegedly fired at the police several shots but no officers were injured. The police vehicle was damaged.
The police started an investigation of public violence case. No suspects have been detained yet.
