Three factories and a car were torched in Mandeni during a night protest.
According to the police statement, the factories were set on fire following violent protests by the community members.
The officers had to use stun grenades to scatter the protesters, after they had handed over a memorandum to the municipality.
The protests started after a letter titled “Shutdown Mandeni” had been circulated among the residents of the area.
“No person shall live a good life with our money while we remain poor,” the letter read.
According to the police spokesperson Lt-Col Thulani Zwane, police officers were closely monitoring the situation.
It is also reported that 27 people had been arrested by the police.
