The police were investigating a criminal conspiracy case which involved taxi drivers. They apprehended four suspects this week in Lephalale who allegedly used a fake meter taxi to rob passengers.
“The suspects were arrested in Ga-Dikgale village outside Polokwane,” the police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.
The other two were caught in Mahwelereng Township outside Mokopane.
“The suspects were reportedly traveling in a white Mazda 323 disguising as a meter taxi and in the process, robbing people at gunpoint while transporting them to their respective destinations,” Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe stated.
According to the police, a few episodes were revealed when the victims of a taxi gang had been forced to transfer money to bank accounts of the criminals.
“These suspects may be linked to more similar cases in and around the Lephalale,” Ngoepe said.
The four will stand trial at the Witpoort Magistrates’ Court next week.
