It appears that overground pedestrian walkways can’t save people’s lives

A hit-and-run caused the death of a 27-year-old pedestrian in Witbank on Saturday morning. The man died after he was hit by a white Isuzu bakkie.

The Witbank police said that they were called to the scene on the N4 highway at about 8:00 a.m. It is believed that the deceased wanted to cross the highway when the accident occurred.

Witnesses on the scene said that ‘neither Vosman nor Witbank Police were available telephonically to assist’.

“I drove to Vosman Police Station and escorted a van to the scene,” a witness said.

That is very weird, but the accident ironically took place under the footbridge that was erected across the N4 highway.

A wall was also erected to prevent pedestrians from crossing the highway, but unfortunately, this does not seem to deter efforts to cross the highway.

“The community is advised to not jump the highways. They should make use of the bridge erected next to KG Mall to avoid accidents,” said Const Kgomotso Maluleke, the Vosman Police Station police spokesperson.
