Explosion in Vanderbijlpark left the town in darkness

An explosion at a substation in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng south, caused the shutdown of electricity.

According to the Emfuleni municipality, a faulty feeder cable caught fire and became the cause of the explosion as the circuit breaker and transformer were blown out.

”The investigation further revealed that the 11kV isolator, at least four 11kV breakers and high voltage cables were damaged beyond repair. Repair work is currently under way at the town substation.”

It is also stated that the water reservoirs located nearby had also been affected by the explosion which could lead to water shortages in several areas.
