A boy from Swindon, South West England, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a 12-month referral order and was put on the sex offenders’ register for two-and-a-half years.
The 12-year-old boy raped his six-year-old sister because he wanted to re-enact a scene from the video game Grand Theft Auto, a court has heard.
The incident was allegedly triggered after the boy watched a sexual act in the R-18+ video game, that has previously allowed players to pick up and engage in an intercourse with sex workers.
The rape was made public after the boy’s sister told her friend at school about the encounter, who later informed a teacher.
The boy’s mother held her son’s hand in court, holding back tears as the charges were read out.
When the judge asked the boy how he would act if he was presented the opportunity to re-offend, he responded: “I would stop myself, I have learned that it’s wrong”.
The mother said she hoped her family could one day reconcile.
“We just want to make things right and do what’s best for the safety of the children,” the mother said.
“My daughter used to be very sad about it all because she worried this was her fault, but she’s come on leaps and bounds,” she added.
The boy was listed on the register of sex offenders for two and a half years.
