A young mother had protected her own mother and found the courage to shoot down a robber who tried to steal a necklace.
The incident happened when a family (an elderly woman, her daughter and a boy aged 8) was driving and stopped at a red traffic light on the corner of Voortrekker Street and Merriman Avenue. The suspected robber attempted to tear off the jewelry of the elderly woman’s neck through the car window half opened. Without hesitating, the daughter took out her pistol and shot straight into the face of the criminal.
“The man had his hands around the elderly woman’s neck and was choking her when he was shot,” the police spokesperson Capt Fikile Funda told journalists.
“The elderly woman, her daughter and a boy of eight were in their car in Vereeniging, south of Johannesburg, on Saturday afternoon,” Capt Fikile Funda also stated.
“Out of nowhere, this man stuck his hands inside the motor vehicle and grabbed the old lady’s throat, choking her. He went for her gold chain,” Capt Fikile Funda said.
An ambulance team which responded to the shooting report concluded that an injury received by the offender resulted in his death right on the scene.
The police had instituted an investigation into the episode.
