Mother who dumped child in Durban drain will face attempted murder charge

A 27-year-old woman who dumped her newborn girl into a storm-water drain in Newlands East is facing charges of attempted murder. According to the reports, the suspect was arrested on Monday after her policeman uncle turned her in.

It is confirmed that the first case hearings scheduled for this week would be held without the woman’s actual presence as she is now being treated in the psychiatric ward.

The baby was rescued from the drain last week after a 3-hour-long operation. The source said the toddler’s mother dumped her child near a family house, one to three days after she gave birth.

The charged woman also lives with her mother who is suffering from cancer.

“Her daughter’s arrest and the allegations have just made her more sick,” the source said.
