A 24-year-old man was arrested for possession of abalone valued at an estimated amount of R370,000 in Cape Town, the Western Cape police said on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said the arrest was made on Tuesday following a tip-off.
“Police members from Athlone [SA Police Service] SAPS acted on information they received about a white Ford Ranger LDV that was busy offloading abalone near Pooke Road Hatton Estate Athlone yesterday (Tuesday).”
Rwexana said the officers approached the vehicle and when the man saw them he started to run.
“One suspect aged 24 was apprehended. Abalone worth an estimated street value of R370,000 was confiscated.”
Rwexana said that once charged the man will appear in the Athlone Magistrate Court.
